Three days of protests took place in Los Angeles over immigration raids. Police and protesters faced off at the Metropolitan Detention Center, where arrested immigrants are being detained.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement posted Saturday on X that it had arrested 118 immigrants. Protests have gone on for three continuous days in response to the raids and arrests.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor of California Gavin Newsom have opposed the President at every turn. President Trump has threatened to arrest Newsom and other California officials. Newsom believes the President’s actions are “those of a dictator”.
California will sue President Trump for federalizing the state’s National Guard. The first time since 1965 since a President has deployed a state National Guard. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson deployed the National Guard to protect Civil Rights activists in Selma, Alabama.
As protests continue in Los Angeles California Highway Patrol vehicles have become targets for demonstrators. Five self-driving Waymo vehicles were also vandalized; the company does not believe it was intentional.
60 People arrested during San Francisco protests
A large crowd gathered outside the ICE headquarters for a solidarity protest and was met by local police. Three police officers have been reported injured.
At 9:00 p.m., Saturday, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system had to shut down due to “civil disturbance.”
Last week, 15 people including children were detained at the San Francisco ICE office.
Many demonstrators stated that the officers that arrived seemed “frustrated.”
