What notable things happened today?
160 years ago, enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom. Almost two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Today the descendants of those enslaved Africans are champions of that history, and stand resilient against oppression. 160 years later and the struggle for our existence in this nation continues.
In 2021, Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday. The holiday shines as a monument to freedom in a time where Black history is under attack. Cultural expression is a part of the framework of this nation.
With the dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion celebrations like Juneteenth are even more important. It is necessary to keep our traditions and culture intact.
