“It is incumbent for us to get our house in order to fully utilize the potentialities of the revolution or to resist our own execution.” – Black Power Manifesto, Dr. Nathan Wright.
In July of 1967 the first Black Power Conference was held in Newark, New Jersey. Over 1,000 delegates gathered for the four-day event. The theme was “The Unity of Black People for the greater good of all.”
Dr. Wright was the chairman of the conference. Wright also introduced the Black Power Manifesto which was well received by those in attendance. Other notable attendees include Ossie Davis, James Farmer Jr., Hoyt Fuller, Nathan Hare, and Maulana Ron Karenga.
Nearly 60 years later and the Black community faces attacks on DEI and racial discrimination. Nationwide organization is very necessary moving forward.
